Since 2017 the MACC has helped us record 60 hourlong episodes of this radio variety show which shares songs, stories, history and music from Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula and beyond. Not only does the show add to the cultural vibrancy of our community, it generates income for Michigan artists and small businesses in our community. The Red Jacket Jamboree is heard on public radio networks in Michigan and distributed through PRX radio exchange. Thank you to the MACC and the residents of Michigan.

Copper Country Preservation and Real People Media is pleased to announce that we have received funding for the 2021-2022 Season (Our fifth!) of The Red Jacket Jamboree from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.

The Red Jacket Jamboree offers antique experience for local residents, tourists and radio audiences. To date we have recorded 46 hourlong episodes featuring dozens of performers: storytellers, musicians, singer-songwriters, local historians, and authors. This exceptional educational and entertaining family show promotes the Upper Peninsula to audiences throughout Michigan. The show stimulates tourism and tourist revenue within our area and throughout the Upper Peninsula.

The Red Jacket Jamboree would not be possible without funding from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. We are deeply grateful for the grant and to the people of Michigan who support cultural events in our state. The arts add to the quality of life for our residents and to the visitor experience. We welcome the opportunity to share the stories of Michigan's Copper Country with the people of Michigan and beyond!

The cast of The Red Jacket Jamboree along with musical guests: Jennifer Barnett and Younce Guitar Duo, celebrate the holiday with two hour-long episodes: “A Billie Holiday Holiday” and “Christmas in the Keweenaw.”

Jennifer Barnett is a rising star within the Jazz world. The Michigan native is currently studying Vocal Jazz Performance at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. For the past two years, she has been named one of America's top young Jazz vocalists by DownBeat Magazine. Not yet 20, Jennifer has been performing in Jazz, Pop and Rock ensembles since she was 12. The Red Jacket Jamboree is excited to introduce you to this rising star!

Younce Guitar Duo takes listeners on a sonic journey woven together by elements of Jazz, Latin, Celtic and other world rhythms. The collaboration between father and son guitar virtuosos, has led to their distinct sound and exquisite original compositions and arrangements. Get ready to hear their unique interpretations of your favorite holiday tunes!

The Red Jacket Jamboree is a NEW old-time radio variety show sharing stories, songs and history from Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula. Hosted by Lena Dorey, the show is performed/recorded in front of a live audience at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Michigan Tech University and also features Martin Achatz, Poet Laureate of the U.P.,the Red Jacket Actors and music by the Copper Cats, with Jerry Younce on guitar, Bill Carrothers on piano, Harry South on bass and Zach Ott on percussion. It's an entertaining show for the entire family. Adult tickets are $20; Students with I.D. are $5. The next performance is Friday, December 20th at 7pm. The audience is asked to be in their seats 5 minutes before the show.

Dave Lorenz, Vice President of Travel Michigan, will be a featured guest on the next performance/recording of The Red Jacket Jamboree on October 3rd . We'll be recording two episodes: “Revenge of the Deer” and our Halloween Spooktacular”

Lorenz is responsible for leading the state's tourism branding, advertising and public relations efforts; overseeing the award-wining Pure Michigan tourism campaign and coordinating overall statewide tourism initiatives.

Lorenz is on the Board of Directors for the U.S. Travel Association, the National Council of State Tourism Directors, Michigan Cares for Tourism, Circle of Michigan, Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau, MotorCities National Heritage Association, West Michigan Tourism Association, Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Grand Rapids Hotel Advisory Board. In 2018, Dave was named to the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International’s “Top 25 Extraordinary Minds of 2018”

Prior to Travel Michigan, Lorenz was the Manager of Partnerships and Promotions, for Meijer, Inc. He also has 14 years' experience in radio broadcasting in roles varying from announcer and news reporter to numerous management positions.

The upcoming performance of The Red Jacket Jamboree, an old-time radio variety show, will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landing and Michigan's most valuable resource- its water! The show will be recorded in front of a live audience on July 18th at the historic Calumet Theatre in Calumet, the village formerly known as Red Jacket. Guest performers: singer-songwriter Jen Sygit and storyteller Pete Griffin join the RJJ cast to help share and interpret the history and culture of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Lansing based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jen Sygit has four solo albums under her belt with her latest release “It’s About Time.” Sometimes traditional, sometimes contemporary, always with a raw honesty “It’s About Time” is a sonic journey through the landscape of Americana music. Produced by Sygit’s long time friend and collaborator Dominic John Davis and featuring guest appearances from Luther Dickinson, Colin Linden and The McCrary Sisters, “It’s About Time” reveals a depth and maturity to Sygit’s ability as both songwriter and performer.

Pete Griffin returns to The Red Jacket Jamboree for his third appearance. Nicknamed the Storytelling Ranger, Pete Griffin has been sharing his stories with thousands of people across the continental U.S. and Alaska. Pete grew up in Cedarville, Michigan before moving to Alaska in 1992. He worked for the US Forest Service as a wildlife biologist and District Ranger until his 2010 retirement. Described as the “Storytelling Ranger,” he's been telling personal stories about life that incorporate natural history, leadership, and learning for years. He's been a storyteller on board Disney and Princess cruise ships, and at libraries, schools, and museums between Alaska, Hawaii, and Michigan. Pete is a member of the National Storytelling Network and was selected as one of the Showcase Performers at the 2017 National Storytelling Conference.

The show, which shares stories, songs and music from the Keweenaw Peninsula, is recorded in front of a live audience at the Calumet Theatre for later radio broadcast. Two hourlong episodes will be recorded: “Copper Town to Motown,” which explores how the histories of these two great cities are interwoven through storytelling and some Motown tunes! The show also celebrates the contributions of the Keweenaw's pioneering women in “Even Women Get the Blues.” We're singing the Blues but this show is sure to lift your spirits.

Vocalist and singer/songwriter Julie McIntosh began her professional career in New York City in the 1980's as lead vocalist with “The Shakes” and “Wreckless Abandon.” She cut her teeth in rock-n-roll, adding a brief stint with Hip-Hop sampling producer John Robie, then moved through the musical genres of Jazz, Rock and Pop until landing in the world of Rhythm and Blues. She has performed with drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, guitarist Billy Hector, and key keyboardist, Tony Z and opened for many notable performers including Buddy Guy, Son Seals, Li'l Ed and The Blues Imperials.

Mary Stewart Adams travels extensively teaching a humanities based approach to understanding the night sky. As a Star Lore Historian and global advocate for naturally dark skies, Adams led the initiative to establish Michigan's only International Dark Sky Park, the 9th in the world at the time. One of the many ways she work to “restore the mythic grandeur of knowing the stars” is through her weekly radio segment “The Storytellers Night Sky, which airs every Monday morning on Interlochen Public radio.

The show is recorded in front of a live audience at the Calumet Theatre for radio broadcast. Two hourlong episodes will be recorded: “Skis, Skates and Sleds,” which celebrates three popular winter sports, and “Springtime in the Keweenaw.”

Originally from Indiana's Wabash River Valley, John Davey has re-established himself on the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The transition has resulted in a new body of work which captures the regions landscape including its vast forests and roaring waves of Lake Superior. Self -reflective tunes like “L'Anse” and “Brave” underscore Davey's journey toward self-realization. His creative lyrical arrangements are often self-deprecating yet remain unapologetic. It's this authenticity combined with his skills as a vocalist and musician which earns Davey a cadre of admirers. His music, a blend of old-time country, rock and contemporary pop, appeals to audiences of all ages. This will be Davey's second appearance on The Red Jacket Jamboree.

As a professional storyteller, Jenifer Strauss uses stories to enrich lives. Her engaging and enthusiastic style has endured her with audiences across the state. Jen's well-loved Great Lakes repertoire includes: lumber era legends, mining stories, shipwreck and lighthouse tales, mysteries, and ghost stories. Her stories are both heart-warming and educational. Jen will share a few personal stories collected during her work and travel in the U.P.

Bill Sproule is a Professor Emeritus, Michigan Tech University where he taught in transportation engineering, public transit, airport planning, and hockey history. He is the author of "Copper Country Streetcars" and soon to-be-released "Houghton - The Birthplace of Professional Hockey."

Dynamic and thought-provoking, heart-warming and educational, Jenifer Strauss is an energy-injected story artist who connects to her audience with warmth, joy and humor. She's been touring and telling tales since 1993 and debuted her Michigan Legends and Lore program back in 1997. This repertoire includes lumber era legends, mining stories, shipwreck and lighthouse tales, ghost stories, and personal tales based on her life-long love affair with northern Michigan.

Jenifer has been a featured storyteller on Michigan Radio's (NPR) stateside. She is coauthor of the book, Telling Stories and co-producer of the CD, U Tell-A-Tale, winner of the Parent's Choice and Storytelling World Awards. Her CD; Michigan Legends and Lore, Stories from Shore to Shore has gained a wide listening audience since 2009.
